In the life of a Peranakan, flowers have always played an important role on occasions such as weddings, birthdays, religious worship, and the like. As a complement to these occasions, the bungai rampay, a potpurri of shredded leaves and flower petals, would add fragrance to the home, while the food, always the heart of celebrations, would have flowers added as an ingredient to enhance the colour and flavour to the uniquely Peranakan dishes.

The floral demonstration will feature some of these flowers, together with containers, which are typically Peranakan in the many impressive arrangements Baba Bernard Tay will present. Bernard is a Komon grade instructor and has been practising his art for 30 years.

An informative talk will also be given by Baba Peter Wee, first Vice-President of the Peranakan Association, on the type of flowers used widely by the Peranakans. An expert on everything Peranakan, and owner of Katong Antique House, Peter will share his knowledge on some of the artefacts used by Bernard in his arrangements.
